Title VII is the primary federal law that makes workplace discrimination illegal in the United States. It was enacted as part of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and remains one of the most powerful protections for employees today.

 

Why Title VII Matters

Title VII is the foundation of modern workplace civil rights. It protects dignity, promotes fairness, and ensures that employment decisions are based on ability and performance — not bias.


What Title VII Does

Title VII prohibits employers from discriminating against employees or job applicants based on:

Religion
Sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, and gender identity)
National Origin
amendments: pregnancy, disability, age
